RadioActive Badges must be awarded by staff members of the RadioActive Project Team or by authorized RadioActive local Learning Facilitators.
Bronze Setup Technician
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Know the difference between broadcasting radio and streaming internet radio.
- Give examples of existing broadcast and internet radio shows.
- Identify the different roles and responsibilities available when running an internet radio station.
- Be aware of the basic technical, organisational and journalistic requirements for streaming a show.
- Describe correct behaviour during broadcast
- Demonstrate these behaviours during live broadcasts (Examples include; moving quietly in the room, switching off unused electronic devices in the room, know and correctly use hand signals including "passing the torch", communicating effectively with the sound mixer or moderator.)
Activities to be completed:
- Understanding the who, what, why, when and How of Internet Radio
- Demonstrate general courtesy and responsibility during a live show.
Silver Setup Technician
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Name the components and explain what they do
- Lay out the components in the order in which they are connected / set-up,
- Read and follow a signal plan (if applicable)
- Plug the cables in.
- Connect to streamer
- Test to see if it works

Gold Setup Technician
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Be able to connect the hardware and software and broadcast an internet radio show unassisted.
- Can modify the setup and signal-line-plan according to needs.
- Successfully demonstrate a variety of set-ups for example, pre-recorded content, live content, multiple speakers. These should include pre-prepared plans regarding a) sound recording and capacities, microfones and monitoring, streaming and replay resources b) energy and power c) internet connection.
Activities to be completed:
- Plan, setup and sucessfully broadcast a variety of internet radio formats.

Bronze Audio Editor
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Record a soundfile
- Transfer it from the recorder to the computer
- Save it in an appropriate place on a computer,
- Access the file from iTunes or soundboard ready for broadcasting.
Activities to be completed:
- Technically creating, storing and accessing audio files.
Silver Audio Editor
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Record a sound file, ‘Clean’ the recording to improve the sound
- Edit the recording to remove unwanted sections of audio
- Add a correctly levelled backing track of music or a soundscape.
Activities to be completed:
- Basic post-production editing
Gold Audio Editor
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Knows what a podcast is and understands the need for it in their particular case
- Correctly documents the podcast
- Clean up an archived broadcast in terms of audio quality and content
- Convert file into a podcast or listen again format and upload it to a website where it is accessible by the audience

Bronze Technical Manager
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Approve an internet radio setup checking it against a pre-prepared signal line plan
- Use a signal-line-plan to diagnose a fault in a set-up
- Correct the fault.

Silver Technical Manager
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Describe some possible common faults and causes of problems in broadcasting.
- Find solutions to these problems by researching or consulting a more experienced person.
- Prepare your own sinal-line-plan based on your own needs and use your own plan to set-up and to troubleshoot for a broadcast.

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Quickly identify and articulate common problems and solutions.
- Display knowledge and understanding gained from experience of having set up and run an internet radio show many times and in different contexts.

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Know the requirements for using commercial or creative commons licensed or licence free music in your particular case.
- Source, evaluate and choose pod-safe/commercial music appropriate for the show.
- Create an archive, bookmarks list or library of pod safe music (or music appropriate for the show)

Silver Music Editor
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Explain copyright issues and license requirements relating to your particular case
- Source evaluate and choose suitable music and sound files to be edited to make jingles loops and stings
- Create an archive, bookmark or library of sound effects, jingles, loops and stings.

Gold Music Editor
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Choose music and sounds to suit or enhance a particular piece of content
- Record and edit your own original sounds/music and publish them with a creative commons license of your choice

Bronze Planning and organisation
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Understand that every member of the team is important.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the whole radio team and how they work together.
- List what jobs have to be done throughout the whole cycle of making a show from conception to broadcast and post-broadcast tasks.

Silver Planning and organisation
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Be a regular contributer to the planning and decision making process for each show.
- Clearly articulate well thought out opinions, ideas and strategies relating the the running of the radio-show
- Recognise others good ideas and cooperate with implementing systems and processes (editorial sign off, keeping documentation etc.)

Gold Planning and organisation
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Chair an editorial or planning meeting
- Assist others in coming to agreements during the planning and decision making process
- Listen to, understand and evaluate all contributions to a group discussion.
- Summarise the agreements and identify areas where decisions still need to be made.

Bronze Responsible Broadcaster
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Identify potential infringements of the GEM before they arise
- Take responsibility for checking others work and advising on GEM issues
- Be the go-to person for advice, queries and issues regarding all aspects of the GEM and legal issues.

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:

- recall what creative commons means and know where to find CC licensed materials.

Gold Copyright and record keeping
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Know the legal requirements for using different types of media content eg creative commons, licence free, commercial, pod-safe, attribution, for your particular case.
- Be able to explain these requirements to your group.
- Take responsibility for management of any legal reporting requirements such as PRS.

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:

- Source, evaluate and choose pod-safe/commercial music appropriate for the show.

Gold Creating Content
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Choose music and sounds to suit or enhance a particular piece of content

- Use editing software such as Garageband or Audacity to compile and edit content ready for broadcast.

Bronze Methods of Journalism
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Compare the difference between writing for radio and writing for other media
- Practice writing passages in a colloquial manner, write what you would say if you were telling a story to a friend or relative.
- Distinguish between different journalistic ad entertainment show types eg. news, documentary, magazine, and music shows
- Identify the types of content which would fall under these headings.*

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Fill in appropriate accompanying documentation to evidence, reference and back up claims in a news story (following the GEM).

- Decide on the purpose of an interview
- Know a range of questioning techniques and their uses.
- Decide what information you wish to elicit from an interviewee and design questions accordingly

Gold Methods of Journalism
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Correctly identify factual and opinion based printed articles.

- Research and write short news items suitable for your station or show.
- Describe ways to evidence, reference or back up claims in a news story.

- Recognise mark up and present a script prepared by another person. (cf. writing for radio)

Gold Performing Content
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Read up on your interviewee/guest, be prepared for their answer so that you can engage with or challenge what they say.
- Have a stock of questions prepared
- Know how to deal with a variety of problems and scenarios such as interviewee/guest talking for too long or not talking enough.
- Know how to deal with technical issues such as background noise, accoustics, environmental factors (also applies to vox-pops)
- Carry out, record/broadcast and conclude an interview.

Bronze Promotion and Reflection
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Identify opportunities for advertising the show (places to display posters, social media networks, etc.)

The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Create appropriate and informative audio or video trailers to advertise the show using garageband, audacity or similar software.
- Share the trailers via social media networks eg. using soundcloud
- Identify highlights from previous shows and edit clips to include in trailers.
- Be a regular contributer to the planning and decision making process for each show.

Gold Promotion and Reflection
The badge holder has shown the following competencies:
- Plan a social media campaign which whilst adhering to Governance and Editorial models, runs smoothly during a live show and in-between shows,

- maintain a two way dialogue with the audience and feed audience responses back into the live show or use it to inform planning for future shows
